Antwerp fashion
This year, the first Antwerp Fashion Festival took place in early June. It was a major fashion celebration featuring one of the most important exhibitions and highlights: the 40th anniversary of the Antwerp Six, with an exhibition at the Antwerp Fashion Museum. But there is also an interesting exhibition to see at the KMSKA!
For this project, the KMSKA invited 11 designers who obtained their master’s degree from the Antwerp Fashion Academy no more than four years ago and have not yet released their own fashion collection. They could choose a room theme, artwork, or detail from the collection themselves to use as inspiration. It adds an extra layer to the museum’s collection, just as the KMSKA likes to do.
Art and fabric
Personally, I have a few favorites, such as:
- Alise Anna Dzirniece in room Heaven with an empty heaven and a fallen angel
- Jaden Li in room Fauna: a garment consisting of various wing-like elements presented on a rotating platform, like a wind-up ballerina.
- Chloë Reners in room Abundance and an artwork by Willem van Aelst that she translates into decoration for an existing silhouette, which is expanded with butterflies that seem to fly away from the silhouette.
It is actually too much to mention, and you have to experience it yourself. A beautiful yellow publication has been released in Dutch and English, so you can have a memento after the exhibition.
The theme is evil, yet all I see are stunningly beautiful creatures. I’m a drag monster and a clown myself, so I’m drawn to the whimsy and beauty of these creatures. In ‘The Temptation of Saint Anthony’ in particular, I see lots of charming little creatures. They’re playing music and running about; to me, it looks like a parade. It depicts the hermit being beset by demons and temptation. Sometimes that’s allowed too.
