Ash Wednesday

Last wednesday was the day … The first time that I could admire the painting change in the St.-Carolus Borromeus church. It is a shame that I had never seen it before (as a brand new city guide; o) It went fairly quickly: the total video I took lasts 6 minutes. It was a bit difficult to get Gerard Seghers’ Creation of the Cross from 1624 up, appropriate … Below a smaller video of the switch.

Easter Monday

The painting that is now hanging here will be changed back on Easter Monday. From then on, “Our Lady of the Carmel” by Gustaaf Wappers from 1840 can be seen. Be sure to check it out, because it is a unique spectacle. The technology is almost 400 years old and it is the only place in the world where they still change the paintings. The paintings are 5.35 meters high and 4 meters wide.

Assumption of Mary

The change takes place a third time around 15 August. In 2018 this will be on August 11. Then appears “The Coronation of Mary” by Cornelis Schut from 1635-1640. Before and after the change there is a little explanation and usually there are also guides from TOPA who give you more information about the rest of this church.

In 2023 on the following dates:

  • Saturday 12 August 19:00

In 2024 on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 14 Februari 14:00
  • Monday 1 April 14:00
  • Saturday ?? August 19:00

There is now an entrance fee, which is 5 euros.
