Marzipan
In previous years there were already several interesting exhibitions of Antwerp Koekenstad vzw: chocolate and the Perrette bar , Salt and Sweet, both at the Groenplaats and Chocolate Secrets in the MAS. It all started, also for me, with the exhibition ‘Coffee with Nottebohm’ in the Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library. Antwerp Koekenstad once again made an interesting exhibition this year: about marzipan in honor of the centenary of massepain Sleeubus.
The Stone Castle
The nice thing is that this is the second expo of Antwerp Koekenstad in The Stone Castle, the oldest building in Antwerp. Before the renovation there was the exhibition ‘Prince 90 years’, which I also guided. The prince biscuit, of course, deserved a castle to celebrate that birthday.
The marzipan exhibition can be reached by taking the stairs at the back of the shop to the second floor. From these rooms you have a beautiful view of the city and the Scheldt. You can also visit Antwerp Story (free with the Museum pass). The marzipan exhibition is free for everyone.
From April to the end of August you can also follow a tour with me in Antwerp Story every Saturday at 2 pm. Tickets available at Visit Antwerp!
Heritage Day
Everything you want to know about marzipan is on the boards around the display cabinets, so I won’t bore you with more information. The display cabinets include figurines by Michael Bracke, animalier who also works at the Antwerp Zoo. He has made several ‘beasts’ in response to the theme of Heritage Day 2023. Heritage Day is on Sunday 23 April and that is one of the last days you can visit the expo.
