Atheneum Deurne
Deurne, the place where I spent the first three years of my life and where I went to school until I was 12 years old. The school that is the subject this week is a high school. So I didn’t go to school there. It is also on the other side of Deurne, this school is in Deurne-Noord, my school was in Deurne-Zuid. A long time ago these two parts were connected with only one bridge.
Eduard Van Steenbergen
The architect Eduard Van Steenbergen (1889-1952) is not very well known, while he has designed beautiful architecture. And especially in Deurne …
Game of volumes
The building had to be designed on a strange pentagonal piece of land. Van Steenbergen made several wings on the edge of the area with a playground in the middle that copies the shape of the ground. An extra building was added in the 1970s by son Eduard Junior. It is like the fashion of that time: a box of rectangular volumes. There are some curves in it, such as at the entrance, where the home of the perfect was. The sanitary block is also semi-circular.
Yellow and blue
The main color of the entire building complex is yellow, the color of the brick. There are, however, some accents in blue glazed bricks. The handrails are also in blue.
School
The school is still in full use, so it cannot be visited just like that. During various events, such as Heritage Days, the school is usually opened. From 2002 to 2012, restoration work was carried out under the direction of Rutger Steenmeijer.
