Silver Triennial

DIVA – the museum for diamonds, jewelry and silver in Antwerp – has been organizing interesting exhibitions since the opening. At this moment it is: the Silver Triennial. What started in 1965 as a local exhibition has become the most important international competition of contemporary silver. 123 artists from 19 countries took part in this edition, the nineteenth. The setup consists of eight dinner tables worked out by scenographers Leo Aerts and Philippe Swartenbroux.

Winners

The jury awarded the first prize to the German Juliane Schölß with a group of cups made in different colors of metal and sizes. Her inspiration came from a party with friends, where they drank different drinks in a stylish bar. She experimented with thin sheets of silver that she folded into the desired shape. The ‘seam’ of the pleating is still visible and has not been eliminated.
The third prize went to Sarah Cossham, also from Germany. Her different vases are made from silver, bronze and copper. She deliberately goes against the rules of traditional silversmithing: she places gems directly in liquid gold. Some are pushed too far so that they are barely visible, but she wanted to achieve these imperfections.

Belgian silver

Belgium was represented in this edition by two silversmiths: David Huycke and Helena Schepens. Their work can also be found in the permanent collection presentation of DIVA. The object ‘Dark Moon’ by Huycke is a sphere that was hammered from a silver plate. Helena Schepens uses a special perforation technique that she has applied here on a scale called ‘Dropar’. She also gives a master class in which eight professionals can further develop their skills in this technique. For those interested there are guided tours, such as a Slow Art tour on Slow Art Day on 4 April.
