Masterpieces

85 drawings are shown here. A total of 100 pieces. All by old masters from Flemish collections, all masterpieces. It not only shows the drawings, but also delves deeper into the who, why and how of drawing in this period. It invites visitors to look further at the motives behind the creation, the artist’s choice of materials, techniques, formats and even dimensions.

Getty Foundation

Because of its original approach, The Getty Foundation selected the exhibition ‘From scribble to cartoon. Drawings from Bruegel to Rubens from Flemish Collections’ for ‘The Paper Project: Prints and Drawings Curatorship in the 21st Century’. This international program supports young curators of prints and drawing collections in their professional development and in building expertise in art on paper. The grant worth 81,000 euros offers the curator of the exhibition, Virginie D’haene, assistant curator of the museum’s Print Room, the opportunity to conduct research into drawings worldwide and to provide a scientific publication for the planned exhibition.

Top collection with Antwerp artists

With a collection of more than 100,000 objects, the print room is one of the top 50 of the world’s most important print rooms. The collection is built around Antwerp artists, from 1500 to today. Rubens, Van Dyck, Tuymans and Panamarenko lie side by side in the depots.

The exhibition challenges the visitor to look beyond a drawing’s subject and composition to consider how and why it was created and why an artist chose specific materials, techniques, formats and even sizes.
